Summary
Chairperson : Virender Singh Sangwan Moderator : Shailja Tibrewal Rare eye diseases, though individually uncommon, collectively contribute significantly to visual morbidity and lifelong disability. For general ophthalmologists, these conditions often pose diagnostic and management challenges due to their subtle early manifestations, phenotypic variability, and limited exposure during routine clinical practice. Delayed recognition can lead to missed opportunities for timely intervention, appropriate referral, and supportive care. This session will offer a beneficial format to clinicians to approach the early diagnosis and comprehensive management of some of the unusual eye diseases in the practice setting. Case examples will be used to emphasize “red flag” clinical features, pragmatic diagnostic modalities, and novel approaches such as the use of image and genetic technology to facilitate early diagnosis. In addition, the session will discuss the current approaches to their management, ongoing research, and the impetus of supportive care measures such as visual rehab and counseling. Targeting both practising ophthalmologists and others, this educational session aims to help demystify rare diseases affecting the eyes and better equip ophthalmologists with knowledge they can implement immediately, which will work towards improving the lives of their patients. 1. Shailja Tibrewal – Case-based practical aspects of rare eye disease management 2. Sandeep Grover - Role of ERG in Retinal Diseases 3.
