Title
"exogenous Endophthalmitis: an Ophthalmic Emergency – Etiology, Diagnosis, and Management"
Summary
Endophthalmitis Is a Severe, Sight-threatening Intraocular Inflammation, Typically Infectious, Constituting an Ophthalmic Emergency. It Arises Exogenously (Post-surgery Like Cataract, Trauma, Injections) or Endogenously (Hematogenous Spread). Symptoms Include Acute Pain, Vision Loss, Redness, Swelling, Photophobia, Floaters, Hypopyon, and Vitritis. Diagnosis Relies on Clinical Evaluation Supported by Vitreous/aqueous Sampling for Microscopy/culture/pcr. Immediate, Aggressive Treatment Is Critical: Intravitreal Antibiotics (Antifungals If Indicated), Systemic Antibiotics for Endogenous Cases, and Often Pars Plana Vitrectomy to Remove Infected Material. Common Pathogens Include Staphylococcus Spp. (Epidermidis, Aureus), Streptococcus and Candida. Prognosis Depends on Pathogen Virulence, Host Immunity, and Especially Intervention Timeliness; Delays Risk Irreversible Vision Loss or Eye Loss. Early Treatment Improves Outcomes; Surgical Prevention Is Key.
