The Moving Clue: From Field to Slit Lamp – A Case of Ophthalmomyiasis Externa
Abstract Body:
Purpose:To report a case of ophthalmomyiasis externa presenting as acute conjunctivitis in urban India.Methods:A 45y/o female presented with sudden redness,foreign body sensation,discomfort in left eye after a fly struck her eye at her farm.Slitlamp examination revealed conjunctival congestion,chemosis,pseudomembrane formation and multiple motile larvae in the fornices without intraocular involvement.Under topical anaesthesia,8 larvae were mechanically removed using sterile buds followed by saline irrigation.Microbiological evaluation identified first-stage larvae of Oestrus ovis sp.The patient was treated with topical antibiotics and lubricants.Results:Symptoms resolved completely at 1-week follow-up.Conclusion:Ophthalmomyiasis externa can mimic acute conjunctivitis.Early recognition and prompt larval removal can prevent visual morbidity.Clinical Implications:consider this as a differential diagnosis of acute conjunctivitis even in urban settings, particularly with livestock exposure.
