Summary
Effective communication is a key to success. It is not uncommon to encounter unhappy patients and unpleasant situations. The unrealistic expectations of patients and sometimes unforeseen complications can create difficult circumstances. Medical education is inadequate to prepare us to deal with these situations. This IC will deal with how to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives. What do I tell my patient in various clinical scenarios? The various clinical situations will include routine cataract surgery, PC rent, nucleus drop, endophthalmitis, refractive surprise, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, poor prognosis like in an advanced glaucoma or retinitis pigmentosa, abandoned retinal surgeries and other sticky situations. The format will be a panel discussion on common situations posed by the chief instructor. The senior and eminent panel will discuss, deliberate and elaborate on how to effectively deal with these situations.

The Chief instructor is a well-known cataract and glaucoma surgeon with an experience of 23 years of working in a reputed tertiary care institute in Southern India. He has conducted and attended many instructions courses in the past both in India and abroad. He has mentored and trained several post graduates and fellows. He is well loved by his patients and believes in ethical and truthful communication with compassion to the patients and the attendants.
