Summary
With advances in technology & increase in modalities of diagnosis, multiple treatment options of ophthalmic diseases, patient care in ophthalmology has become complex. While outcomes have improved, the chances of safety errors in eye care have increased. Publications show that while "Never Incidents" occur at a rate of 1 in 10,000 procedures in ophthalmic practice, it is lower in other surgical specialities with the rate being 1 in 20,000. The possible errors are operating the wrong eye, implanting an IOL of wrong power or design, medication errors including intraocular injections, technical, diagnostic & documentation errors. This course is about how we can create a culture of safety and structuring practices in clinical work to ensure a safe environment including developing safety protocols, safety checklists, performance indicators, training the staff, monitoring, creating a platform for reporting, analysis and empowering the staff to create a safe environment for patient care.

Chief Instructor has rich experience of developing clinical teams to provide surgical & outpatient care of highest quality. Has been involved in developing structured systems to monitor patient compliance, surgical complications & postoperative visual outcome. In the recent past has developed safety teams in outpatient clinics, investigation areas & in operation theater and guided them to develop patient safety protocols in their area of work based on what goes wrong & safety incidents reported in their area of work. This helped in developing culture of safety & quality in the day today work.
