Title
Resurgence of surface ablations - towards safety!
Summary
In 1995, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the excimer laser for use in laser vision correction as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). Because of slow healing, pain, and the risk of the vision-threatening haze associated with PRK, the industry quickly adapted a thin, lamellar corneal-flap procedure. LASIK addressed the shortcomings of PRK by promising rapid visual recovery, low pain, and a low risk of haze. And despite the femtosecond laser and newer microkeratomes that offer the surgeon new choices and improvements in corneal-flap procedures, the risks associated with LASIK, have prompted a resurgence of surface ablation techniques. More biomechanical stability with less risk of ectasia and less dry eye are among the top reasons for the resurgence. The chance of LASIK-flap complications favors surface ablations. Good candidates for surface treatment are patients with a high risk of flap complications, thin corneas, and those with non-orthogonal astigmatism.
Resume
I am a senior practising consultant with an approximately 32 years of overall experience and 15 years of experience in the refractive world. I have been actively involved in the refractive society's like ISCKRS. With hundreds of refractive surgeries on my name, I am a witness to the changing trends from surface ablative procedures to LASIK and back to surface ablations, enduring to its more safe profile. I have been a national and an international speaker as well as attendee to various refractive conferences.
